COLLEGE GUIDANCE
Support is also available to assist students in preparing for college admissions tests. A smaCollege Guidance at Shortridge Academy begins with the premise that students who achieve the greatest success in the college admission process are able to find the “right fit” based on an understanding of their strengths, passions and interests. Through one-on-one meetings and small group workshops, students participate in self-assessments, identify their needs and interests and learn to navigate a variety of resources in order to develop a balanced list of schools. Students have the opportunity to attend college fairs and visit local college campuses upon occasion. In addition, students are supported throughout the entire application process; they are provided with assistance in organizing application materials, including letters of recommendation, writing essays, meeting application deadlines, and preparing for campus visits and interviews.
ll group, 10-week long SAT preparation workshop is offered to juniors and seniors. In addition, one-on-one tutoring is available for both the SAT and ACT. All students have the opportunity to participate in practice tests. Our college counselor assists students in signing up for tests, applies for accommodations for students as needed, and coordinates transportation to and from local high schools where the tests are offered.
In addition to college counseling, students and families can also receive guidance in exploring additional post-high school options, such as gap year programs. This is a great option for students who may be graduating high school mid-year or for those who may want or need some additional time to be ready for college.
Post-high school planning is a very exciting process, though it can be anxiety producing for students and parents. We are confident that every student at Shortridge Academy has a number of very good options to explore and we will guide students and families in making the best decision relative to the students’ individual needs and interests.
